When a household applies for rent-geared-to-income assistance, they are applying to receive help with their rent. Generally, the household will have to move into a building where this help is offered. Once they are accepted for move-in, their income and assets are reviewed (in greater detail than during the application process) and their rent is calculated based on this review. Numerous rules and guidelines must be followed before a households rent can be calculated, and many factors affect how much rent a household will be required to pay.
The household is then housed in a unit (apartment, townhouse, or other housing) where they are charged a monthly rent based on their income. The rest of the rent is paid for by the County of Dufferin through a subsidy payment to their landlord. In some cases, the household will have to pay for some or all of their utilities; sometimes, their utilities are included in their monthly rent charge.
The household is still required to live under the rules of their landlord, and must maintain their eligibility for rent-geared-to-income assistance, as is explained in this manual and the other resources available to applicants.
