Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Goods Recycling Days

"Chemical products in your home such as cleaners, paint thinners, sprays and pesticides can be a potential danger to you, your family, the community and the environment. Most of us have a variety of such products stored in our cupboards, closets or garages. Household hazardous wastes that are washed down the drain, or put in storm sewers can cause water contamination. Items put in the garbage end up in the landfill. Even though you may have a very small quantity, your waste, in addition to that from other residents, can add up to a substantial amount". (source: SWRC).

Electronic Waste

In the fall of 2003, the County of Dufferin commenced a new initiative at HHW Days to recycle obsolete and damaged electronic goods. According to two federal studies, Canadians will dispose of 50 million computers over the next three to four years. On average, it is estimated that Canadians produce 4.5 kilograms per capita of electronic waste, that's over 140,000 tonnes of electronic waste each year that is filled with such heavy metals as lead, cadmium and mercury, among other harmful materials.

Instead of allowing electronic equipment such as computers, televisions, DVDs/VCRs, and telephones (among other electronic goods) go to the landfill for disposal; the County is collecting these products at HHW Days for recycling. The products are broken down and the parts are recycled as much as possible. By collecting electronic equipment, we are making sure that the heavy metals found in these products are not ending up in landfills.
